Researcher Says Female Viagra Works

A new treatment is available for women who are unhappy with their sex lives. Arginmax has been called the "female Viagra."

A Stanford researcher said her study proves it works. And you don't need a prescription to get it. Loss of sex drive in women is a common problem that has been difficult to treat, and Viagra is great for men but far less effective in women. That's why a Stanford research project looking into a treatment for women that works is attracting so much attention. A couple of years ago, Hendy Lund found herself living the good life.

Lund was young, successful, and happily married, but there was something missing -- she had lost interest in sex. "If I had been 58, I would have sort of mentally adjusted and said, 'Well, I'm getting older, it is normal,'"Lund said. "But I'm 28 (and) I'm in love with my husband. This is wrong. It is not right, it's wrong, and I need to do something about it." Lund is not alone. Many women have the same complaint. Dr. Mary Lake Polan, Stanford Medical Center's head of gynecology and obstetrics, said that as many 50 to 70 percent of her female patients are unhappy with their sex lives. Polan said that many patients come to her wondering "where their desire went." "Women actually come in and say, 'I have no more libido, I used to like sex and I can still achieve orgasm, but it is so much work and I'm just not interested anymore and I used to be interested,'" Polan said. "Women find that so disturbing."

Besides a few hormone-based treatments with lots of side effects, women have had few options to help out in these situations. That's why Polan said she agreed to study a nutritional supplement called Arginmax, a supplement that promises to jumpstart sexual desire. Polan said she was skeptical at first. "I'm not terribly knowledgeable about nutritional supplements, but it seemed worth trying because it didn't seem to have a downside," Polan said. "It wouldn't be terribly expensive, and it might possibly help." Polan put together a double-blind clinical trial where one group of women got the supplement and the other group got a placebo. Lund was one of the first people to volunteer for the study. "After two weeks, I started feeling better," Lund said. "I started having a little more energy (and) a little more interest. By the end of the month, I was feeling much better." Polan concluded from testing that "Arginmax seems to help women with sexual dysfunction and improves their ability to function sexually."

Arginmax is essentially a multivitamin with an added concoction of ginkgo ginseng and something called l-argineen. Researchers theorize that l-argineen increases blood flow in the way Viagra works for men. Polan said that while she believes Arginmax can help many women, it is not a cure-all. "It's not just about taking a pill or a nutritional supplement," Polan said. "You really have to look at the entire broad spectrum for women." Lund said Arginmax helped her, and that she plans on taking it every day for the rest of her life. "I was really enjoying life, except for this one aspect, and (I told myself that) there's got to be something I can do about this."
